🎯 Income Documents
📄 Select the income documents you have received and the correct quantity.
🔍 Examples:
1️⃣ You have been issued two forms one W-2 and one 1042-S. Select each form type separately and the quantity for each should be 1.
2️⃣ You have received two 1042-S forms. Select 1042-S as an income document and quantity 2.
❗Do not combine forms regardless if they are the same type.
📢IMPORTANT: Each 1042-S form includes three identical copies (B, C, and D) given to the income recipient. In the “Income documents” screen, one 1042-S form with copies B, C, and D counts as 1. Two such forms count as 2.
🎯 1042-S
👉 Type of entity - Please choose the payer type for the given 1042-S from the drop-down.
⚠️ NOTE: If the uploaded 1042-S form is from IIE, the entity should be "College, University or other Educational Institution".
🔍 You have two ways to enter your 1042-S form(s):
▶️ Upload a scan or photo of your 1042-S form: Once you upload the document, the 1042-S window will update with the information uploaded.
⚠️NOTE: Verify with your paper or electronic 1042-S that the information uploaded onto Sprintax matches the form.
➡️ Enter the information by hand: Ensure you enter information from your paper or electronic form exactly as it appears, including the UNIQUE FORM IDENTIFIER at the top.
❗Fields left blank show in blue but may not all be required.
✔️ Additional boxes you may need to select in the 1042-S window:
📌 If box 13e on your 1042-S form is blank (issuer lacked your US Tax number), enter your SSN or ITIN in box 13e of the 1042-S window.
📌 If box 13e of your 1042-S form is blank and can’t be edited, it is because you have selected you do not have SSN or ITIN.
📌 If you do not have a state indicated in box 17c please select the state associated with the 1042-S income.
💡 Example: If you received scholarship income for studying in Illinois, select Illinois in box 17c.
⚠️ Selecting certain states in 17c may require filling boxes 17a/17b in the 1042-S window. If your 1042-S form lacks this info, enter “0” in those boxes.
👀 After completing your 1042-S form in Sprintax, you might see an extra question based on your immigration status:
ℹ️️ Compensatory or grant scholarships are awarded to students, trainees, or researchers who must perform personal services, such as teaching or research, as a condition for receiving the grant.
⚠️ NOTE: If your 1042-S form is from IIE then select NO as an answer for that question.
💡Tip: If you selected the wrong number of 1042-S forms, adjust it on the “Income Documents” screen.
☝️ Example: You chose 3 for the 1042-S document but only have 2. Change the quantity to 2 in the “Income Documents” screen. Verify each form before continuing.
📢 REMINDER: Do not duplicate 1042-S forms. Each form has 3 copies - B, C, and D shown in the upper right corner. All copies contain the same income/tax info, so enter it only once.
🎯 Form W-2
👉 Employer Type - Please choose the employer type for the given W-2 from the drop-down.
