Social Security and Medicare (FICA) taxes

ℹ️ Social Security and Medicare taxes, or FICA, may show on your W-2 (boxes 4 and 6). If you worked in the US on an F-1, J-1, M-1, Q-1, or Q-2 visa as a nonresident for tax purposes and your employer wrongly withheld these taxes, you might qualify for a refund.

☝️ IRS rules require you to first ask your employer for a FICA refund and wait 1 month for their reply. If they don't refund it, Sprintax can help prepare a FICA refund claim in Step 3 Let's talk money, sub-step Social Security. This won’t impact your federal or state tax filing. You have up to three years after the tax year to claim the refund.
